The manor was especially cool and drafty that evening, but the warmth from the fire along the south wall kept warmth in the bones of the eagerly awaiting guests. An edict had come to Orinda and Jack von Heart, members of the House of Whispers’ ranks, each cunning assassins, but apprentices still in many regards. Accompanying them in the sitting room outside Master Sernias kiNovreck’s study were two other strange individuals, Tawnos of the Order of Truth and a mercenary of some sort that Jack had dragged along. The four sat in silence, awaiting the Master, curious what the House of Whispers wanted of them.
The hour ticked by, and eventually they were summoned to join him along with an unfamiliar man in formal attire. He announced himself as Lord Fidelius Crenwick, advisor to his lordship King Noren tiKalloban, and shortly after he broke the news that King Noren was dead, assassinated by some agent of unknown origin in the night two days prior. An old companion of Sernias, Fidelius called upon him to uncover who had performed such a volatile act in these times of unsteady peace and to ask for aid in hiding the death of Iscobal’s leader from all others until enough information could be found. He urged the present parties to undertake these tasks and treat them with urgency and subtlety, insisting that the fate of the Nine Kingdoms could be at risk, that the Steadlands could easily erupt into war if this event were revealed without a person to hold responsible with due evidence to back up such claims.
And so the three debated at length about how they would uncover the king’s assassin all the while covering his assassination from prying eyes.
