Orinda, Tawnos, and Jack, the three attempting to infiltrate the palace, seemed to have the knowledge they needed on getting in after Orinda’s scouting, just not all the tools. They debated at length about the proper entrance strategy, deciding between the wall in the cellar that ran next to a sewer tunnel, the grate leading to the sewers, and trying to sneak across the courtyard. Eventually they settled on the iron grate that barred the old tunnel used as a sewage sluice at some point in the past. It consisted of an iron frame, iron bars, and brackets with iron rivets holding it inset in the brick wall. Notions of breaking the brick or removing the rivets were mention, but ultimately discarded for the easy solution of cutting the bars. If only they had the tools to do so, this would be an effortless job.
And since a guard had offered to let them travel into town, the three decided to see what numenera they could pick up in the market or from their friends at the House of Whispers’ local chapter. Orinda set off to the House of Whispers as Tawnos and Jack decided to scour the markets. In the markets many numenera shops were found a bit off the beaten path, but their prices were high and their tools not the most helpful. Luckily, the House had more to offer, and after getting Orinda in contact with a few dealers, she was able to take away a device that would all them to phase through solid objects, much the way she already could, as well as some strobe flash bangs and shades to protect their eyes, which should help with the creatures below in the sewers, she was assured.
When they returned to their holding place, a page had arrived with a message that the palace adviser, Fidelius, had received their missive and would have them relocated within the palace by the end of the next day. This brought relief and frustration to the three, their work cast aside as mostly useless, but Orinda was still happy at the goodies she had obtained.
The next day a page came to escort them to proper quarters in the palace, and upon doing so Tawnos requested an audience with the royal adviser, Fidelius, and the late King’s sister, Cevine. They were put up in lavish suites on the west side of the palace, overlooking the port below and the vast western sea. They settled in, and Orinda, still acting as servant, decided to try and collect information from other servants, not ending up very lucky in doing so, but nevertheless gleaning that this palace, unlike most noble edifices, was run in a very protective, silo-ed manner, keeping any segment of the staff or elite quarantined from any other as much as possible, a very odd policy indeed.
At last, evening came, and the three made their way to a scheduled dinner in a private banquet hall with Lady Cevine tiKalloban. They arrived early, and as Jack and Tawnos situated themselves at the humbling dining table, Orinda was whisked away to the kitchens to help serve her masters. Tawnos quickly began to survey the area for numenera, his instincts as a representative of the Order kicking in without thought, and numenera he did find, but none that helped him greatly. And there they waited for Lady Cevine, hopeful that they might uncover some nugget that might finally help them along with their daunting tasks.
